The Proactiv acne treatment plan is simple enough to employ, yet quite time consuming. Each day users are instructed to perform a three step ritual, twice; and that’s just with the common 3 product system. The treatment plan also comes in four and five step varieties!

The first step is called “Renewing Cleanser”. This is an oil-free base of tiny scrubbing apricot granules that are used to aid in the exfoliation of dead skin cells and other impurities found in zit zones. These grains unclog the opening of the pore to allow deeper penetration of the cleansing agent. This cleansing agent is what the manufacturers call “prescription-grade” benzoyl peroxide. This is what penetrates the infected pores, comedos, and attacks the bacterium that lives beneath the surface.

The next step is the “Revitalizing Toner”. This is described as a refreshing, alcohol-free substance that further aids in the removal of dead skin cells. It is helpful in unclogging pore that are in the zit development stage, perhaps still invisible to the naked eye. By removing excess skin oil, it is said to give the skin a younger and rejuvenated appearance. Primarily composed of water, glycolic acid, and witch-hazel, this toner is said to help achieve a botanical balancing of the skin tone.

The final phase of the three-step regimen is the “Repairing Lotion”. As with the “Renewing Cleanser”, the active ingredient here is benzoyl peroxide (2.5%). This prescription grade, finely milled agent is light and oil-free. It performs its duty by attacking infected pores to heal blackheads and blemishes, also preventing future breakouts.

The fine print is also interesting. It states clearly that after applying this three step process to infected areas, you are not to go outside. That is unless you apply a sunscreen. Proactiv conveniently sells such a moisturizing sunscreen at additional cost. This would be step four unless you do not ever receive exposure to sunlight. You are also warned that the peroxide in steps 1 and 3 are probable culprits of fabric bleaching. So don’t get it on your clothing, washcloths, towels, or carpet.

Sufficient warnings are also advocated against using Proactiv if your skin is sensitive or prone to agitation from benzoyl peroxide as it may dry the skin causing redness, drying itching, cracking, or possible swelling.

And in case you are not one of those who may experience this drying effect, Proactive offers “Daily Oil Control”. It is said to make your zit-free skin glow without shining, looking radiant instead of oily. It promises to keep your pores unclogged and your fresh skin radiant all through the day in a balanced beautiful state.
