Quick Tips for Treating Acne

posted on June 4th, 2008 ·

Let´s face it, one of the biggest skin problems that you hear about is something called acne. Almost all preteens and or teenagers get acne at some point in their life. Sometimes it can stick with a person even in their adulthood. A lot of people blame acne on eating certain foods, however that is just a myth. The truth of the matter is that acne is caused by one of two things, or even both. It is caused by teenage hormones and or genetics.

Each person is different, and what that means is that some people may have a very mild case of acne while others may have a very severe case of acne, or some people might not even get acne at all. No one can avoid getting it, however they can treat it. If acne goes untreated then the majority of the time it can, and typically does, leave scars on a person. The most popular place of getting acne is anywhere on the face, neck, back, and sometimes the chest.

The two most common words that most people hear when someone is talking about acne are whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads are a small pale, whitish lump in the skin due to a clogged sebaceous gland. Blackheads are a yellowish or blackish plug of material accumulated in the duct of a sebaceous gland, which are usually the primary lesions in acne.

Acne can be treated, but keep in mind that not everything will work for every person. When selecting a product, if possible, choose something for your skin type (normal, oily, etc.). There are many different products out there. They range from cleansing pads to gel facial cleansers. There are even some products that you can apply to your face at night and not have to worry about washing it off. Typically it´s in a form of a clear liquid gel.

Aloe VeraFor those of you who wish to treat acne in a more natural way I have listed a few different methods below.

  • If you have very oily skin you can apply a small amount of aloe vera gel (store bought) to your skin. This will help to dry out your skin and clear up your complexion. However, try not to do this more than two or three times a week. If you use aloe vera gel on your skin too much it can cause your skin to become too dry.
  • Put a large handful of chopped parsley leaves into a bowl. Pour one cup of boiling water over the parsley. Cover the bowl and allow it to steep until it reaches room temperature. Strain the parsley and water, and then apply the liquid to your face as a compress. Leave it there for fifteen minutes. This can be used daily. It will help to clear up your complexion and unclog your pores.
  • Create a baking soda and water paste. Apply it to your face and leave it on for five minutes. You can then rinse the paste off with apple cider vinegar, followed by a rinse of plain water. Finally, apply vitamin E oil to your face and leave it on overnight.

Treating Teenage Acne

posted on July 17th, 2007 ·

Acne is a skin disorder most common in teens than in adults. It is usually caused by excessive production of oils commonly associated with increase in hormone levels when your child hits puberty. As parents, you should never ignore this skin disorder. If untreated, it could greatly affect your teenager’s self-confidence. Worse, acne is known to leave scars from the pimples.

Preventing acne should be the first step you should take especially if you have a family history of the condition. Washing the skin at least twice a day would ensure that all dirt and grime are removed. Use only mild soap and water. As much as possible, you should use soap that does not have any harsh ingredients like perfumes or moisturizer. When your teen has a pimple, you must not encourage popping it or else it could become infected.

You should also try over-the-counter medication like Proactiv. These acne treatment solutions contain benzoyl peroxide, which is known to be very effective in killing bacteria. Your teen should apply the treatment before going to bed and make sure that it becomes part of his nightly routine. In addition, ensure that your teen engages in regular physical activity, avoid late nights and eat fiber-rich foods like vegetables. Proactiv Solution

If your teen already has an acne problem, you should try using a mild acne treatment solution for 4-6 weeks. If there is no noticeable improvement, it is definitely time to see a dermatologist.

Helping your teen prevent and treat acne will make him realize how important it is to have good skin. Teaching your teen about good skin hygiene will encourage him to adapt the habit of taking care of his skin until he grows old. It is an important legacy that all parents should leave their children.

Things to Avoid When Treating Acne

posted on July 12th, 2007 ·

Not all of us are gifted with great skin. People at risk for the disorder were observed to have a family history of it. The good news is acne is treatable. There are even over-the-counter medications like Proactiv that could help you treat acne without having to spend much. In addition to using an acne treatment solution, you should also remember several important things.

For starters, you should have patience. It usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks before you actually see visible results. Do not expect great skin overnight. As long as there are no adverse effects or allergic reactions, you should continue applying your acne treatment solution. Aside from this, make sure you wash your face with mild-soap and water at most twice a day. If you wash your face too much, it could be stripped of its natural oils and cause it to dry. Also, you should never scrub your skin while washing since this will irritate it. fight_acne_with_proactiv.jpg

When treating acne, you should not aggravate it by using cosmetics or exposing your skin to the harmful rays of the sun. Try to use a sun block if you must go outside. On the other hand, cosmetics can contain harmful ingredients that might not work well with your acne treatment. Besides, these cosmetics can clog your pores unnecessarily, creating the perfect breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria.

Lastly, you should also avoid stressful activities that could cause you to miss meals or lose precious hours of sleep. Sleeping and eating right have been known to benefit the skin and you should make sure that you get enough. Six hours of sleep, vegetable and fruits are just what your skin needs. Exercising regularly can also help you fight stress and at the same time, improve blood circulation, which would make the removal of toxins faster.
